Road Safety in the Czech Republic / Traffic education

Traffic education in the Czech Republic

  • Since September 2013 a compulsory subject in all elementary schools in the Czech Republic (CZ) in accordance with the framework curriculum (set by the Ministry of Education)
  • Participation of Czech schools in traffic education (TE): 100% elementary schools
  • Key element in the area of road safety
  • Sharing theoretical and practical knowledge
  • Building a value system for children and youth
  • Themed plan of TE – systematic education of TE for first year students (theory and practical knowledge on children’s traffic playground –  with the possibility of obtaining a Youth driver’s license for students in their fourth year of elementary school)
  • Continuous preparation of second year elementary school students
  • Road safety – experiential program for high schools
  • BESIP regional coordinators – activities in individual regions of the country; Ministry of Education accreditation for teaching TE curriculum
  • Traffic competition for young cyclists – regional and district rounds + national round (2012/13 – 150,000 elementary school students participated)

Educational materials for TE for the 2013/14 academic year:

  • Conceptual grip of traffic education – kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools
  • BESIP ensured the preparation of methodology for teachers + educational materials
  • Choice of various pedagogy regarding working with students

A/ Kindergarten (improving basic skills and senses of pre-school children, i.e. orientation in a space outside home – on a street, sidewalk, road, playground, etc.; recognizing colours, shapes, speed estimation; understanding a close and far objects, safe place for games, etc.)

Educational materials: animation stand + working sheets, drawing books, TE spots

B/ Elementary school (developing responsibilities of a pedestrian and a cyclist; safe trip from home to school, i.e. in the closest surrounding of a child; starting from age 10, unsupervised  interaction in traffic):

Educational materials (1st level and 2nd level): work books, educational stands, program for interactive boards, TE materials for teachers, themes for project teaching, TV spots, BESIP stickers, educational animated spots, interactive tests

C/ High school (emphasis on student’s values and the impact on emotional perception):

Educational materials: multimedia shows, facilitated discussions with students
