According to recent statistic data about 25 % of the fatal road traffic accidents are caused by drivers impaired by alcohol in the EU member states. The Czech Republic belonged among the countries with the lowest number of the persons killed by drunken drivers for a long time. Unfortunately in past 2 years the situation has got worse. The following data of the Czech Police Statistics show what has happened.
There were 5 725 road traffic accidents caused under influence of alcohol in 2009 of which 4 462 were caused by drivers of personal cars, 343 by drivers of lorries, 522 by cyclists, 203 by pedestrians, 132 by motorcyclists, 12 by drivers of agriculture tractors etc.
There were 123 persons killed and 2 658 persons injured in road traffic accidents caused under influence of alcohol, which represents 15 % of total number of persons killed and 9,7 % of total number of persons injured in 2009.
Comparing year 2008 to year 2009 the Czech Police Statistics registers:
- Increase of persons killed in road accidents caused by the alcohol impaired road users from 80 persons killed in 2008 to 123 persons killed in 2009
- Decrease of persons injured (both seriously and slightly injured) caused by the alcohol impaired road users from 2 970 persons in 2008 to 2 656 persons in 2009
- Decrease of number of accidents caused by the alcohol impaired road users from 7 252 road accidents in 2008 to 5 725 road accidents in 2009
Drivers of motor vehicles caused 86,2 % of road traffic accidents caused under influence of alcohol in 2009.
Young drivers up to 25 years caused 23 % of total road accidents caused under influence of alcohol and 19 % of persons killed in these road accidents in 2009.
