Prevention of Road Accidents of Children in the Czech Republic from the Point of View of the Ministry of Transport
The National Road Safety Strategy approved by the Czech Government in 2004 has settled a national target to cut number of persons killed by 50% up to 2010 comparing the data of 2010. Although there is no specific target for child traffic injuries in this Strategy, there are specific tasks aimed with children in order to achieve the general target. They are as follows:
- To increase usage of child restrain device
- Too improve trafic education of children
- To increase wearing rates of bicycle helmets among children
- To support programmes like “Safe Route to School” across whole country
Evaluation of the Strategy in the firs half of 2008 shows that most of elements of the Strategy aimed with children are going well. There are specific programmes implemented by the Czech Ministry of Transport, Road Safety Department on national, regional and local levels. They are as follows:
- The EUCHIRES – European programme on increase of usage of child restrain devices
- Support and improvement systém of child traffic plygrounds including of improvements of methodology, both theoretical and practical
- Improvements of texbooks for children and teachers for traffic education at schools
- Support of useage of retroreflexive materals among children
- Dissemination of information of necessity of wearing of cycle helmets by children, children and parents are informed about this matter
- Support of the Safe Route to School Project on local level
- Involvement in the BCA WHO projects aimed with traffic injury prevention (cycle helmets, Safe Routes to School, Visibility).
